CakeFil Candle Filtration for Mining and Industrial Water Treatment

Mining and industrial water treatment share two defining filtration challenges: very high suspended solids loadings that exhaust conventional filter systems rapidly, and the economic imperative of recovering valuable materials from the process stream — magnetite from iron ore circuits, precious metals from leach solutions, and process water for reuse in water-scarce mining regions.

CakeFil's high-capacity cake-building design with efficient slurry discharge handles these challenges in continuous automated operation, replacing the labour-intensive filter press alternatives most mining operations currently rely on.

Mineral recovery — magnetite and iron ore

Iron ore beneficiation circuits produce fine mineral slurries — particularly magnetite concentrates from wet magnetic separation — that must be dewatered before further processing. CakeFil's dry discharge configuration dewaters mineral concentrates from the filter cake, producing a lower-moisture product than vacuum drum filters or belt presses at equivalent particle size. Fully automated cycle management eliminates the operator-dependent production variability inherent in manual filter press operation.

Membrane pre-filtration — UF and RO protection

Industrial process water carrying fine suspended solids must be polished to below 5–10 micron before membrane filtration. Inadequate pre-filtration causes rapid membrane fouling, reducing flux and shortening membrane life — a cost consequence that justifies investment in effective pre-treatment. CakeFil with diatomite filter aid achieves the below-5 micron standard membrane manufacturers specify as minimum pre-treatment, in a fully automated system that maintains this standard continuously.

    Process wastewater polishing

Industrial facilities discharging process wastewater to surface water or municipal treatment systems are subject to increasingly strict suspended solids limits under US EPA Clean Water Act effluent guidelines, Canadian provincial regulations, Gulf Cooperation Council environmental standards, and EU Water Framework Directive. CakeFil polishing filters installed on process wastewater streams remove fine suspended solids to levels that comply with these discharge limits — eliminating environmental compliance risk from suspended solids exceedances.
