Q-Filter — Active Vacuum Belt Filter for Aqueous Cleaners and Machine Coolants
The Q-Filter is the result of a technology partnership between K Factor and Esselent Solutions B.V. of the Netherlands — a European specialist in separation, filtration, and magnetic systems for the metal finishing, automotive coating, and precision manufacturing sectors. The Q-Filter is Esselent's flagship product: an active vacuum belt filter that achieves filtration to 1 micron absolute using an intelligent control system that no competing vacuum belt system possesses.
The defining innovation of the Q-Filter is its control philosophy. Conventional vacuum belt filters apply a fixed or manually adjusted vacuum and advance the filter cloth on a timer. The Q-Filter continuously monitors pressure drop across the cloth and adjusts vacuum force in real time — preventing the cloth compression that wastes media and degrades filtration in conventional systems. The result: more dirt removed with less cloth, finer filtration through better cake management, and lower operating cost than any comparable system.

The intelligent control difference — why it matters
In any vacuum belt filter, the filter cake is the filtration medium. As the cake builds, it captures finer and finer particles — but it also resists flow, causing the vacuum pump to work harder. In conventional systems, this increased vacuum eventually compresses the cake beyond the point of effective filtration: particles that were being captured start bypassing a compressed, over-dense cake. At this point, the cloth must advance — discarding a partially effective cake and wasting both filtration potential and cloth.
The Q-Filter's control system prevents this entirely. It continuously adjusts vacuum to maintain the cake at optimal density — firm enough to capture fine particles, open enough to maintain flow without compression. The cake is used to its full filtration potential before the cloth advances. The practical result: cloth consumption is dramatically lower than comparable systems, and filtration quality remains consistent through the entire cloth cycle rather than degrading as compression increases.

Primary applications — Q-Filter
Aqueous cleaner filtration in metal finishing and automotive
Aqueous cleaning lines — used to remove machining oils, stamping lubricants, and metallic fines from metal parts before surface treatment, coating, or assembly — use water-based cleaning solutions that rapidly accumulate contamination. As metallic fines, oil, and processing residues build in the cleaner bath, cleaning effectiveness degrades and parts fail cleanliness inspection.
The Q-Filter continuously filters the cleaning solution, removing metallic particles down to 1 micron and extending bath life by maintaining cleaning chemistry at consistent concentration. In automotive body shop operations, Q-Filter systems on aqueous cleaning circuits have extended bath life by 3–4x compared to conventional filtration — reducing chemical purchase cost and the regulated waste generated by bath dumps.
Machine coolant filtration — precision applications
For precision machining operations — fine boring, broaching, reaming, thread grinding — where coolant contamination directly affects dimensional accuracy and surface finish quality, the Q-Filter's 1 micron capability delivers coolant clarity that paper bed and gravity media systems cannot match.
The Q-Filter is particularly suited to precision applications where floor space constraints prevent installation of a larger vacuum system, or where the process uses aqueous coolants or cleaning solutions that carry fine metallic particles and require consistent sub-5 micron filtration to maintain part quality.
Phosphate pretreatment rinse water filtration
In automotive phosphate pretreatment lines, the final rinse stages require the cleanest water — phosphate bath carryover containing metallic salts, fine particles, and chemical residues must be removed before the rinse water contacts the freshly phosphated body panel. The Q-Filter's 5 micron standard (1 micron with pre-coat) provides the particle removal needed to protect final rinse quality without the space requirements of larger vacuum systems.
